Tugley Woods

The tightness in her chest was growing, constricting her breathing with every passing moment that Rabbit pushed herself forward, closer to the compound and safety. She had left the bear broken and bloodier in the forest, but not until after it had swatted it her against a rather impressive oak with low lying branches. She had heard several things crack in her chest on impact, things she didn’t want to ponder on at the moment.

The sun, which had risen nearly an hour before, was slowing spilling it’s way through the trees and filling the familiar path with muted light. Light that made the shadows in the forest deeper and every noise drew her attention, drew her fear to the forefront of her thoughts. Shaking her head, she winced as her now loose hair fell forward to tangle against the wound crossing her cheek. A trembling hand rose to push it away and drew a hiss through clenched teeth as the hair sliced across the exposed nerves.

Her steps stumbled and she collapsed onto her hands and knees, head hanging low on her shoulders before she pushed herself up and onward until Rabbit reached a seven foot tall chain-link fence. Her shoulders sagged, chin dropping toward her chest when she realized she’d come in from the northern end and it was half a click before the next gate and complete safety. Jaw thrusting forward she lifted her arms, ignoring the sudden onslaught of pain with the simple movement, and began the arduous task of pulling herself up.

Rabbit reached the top and made it partially over before she lost her balance and tumbled, falling. A strangled cry was pulled from her throat as she landed on her injured side and she lifted her head, attempted to push herself up and back on her feet, but instead she collapsed onto her back as breathing became a rather large and difficult problem and the morning sunlight dimmed as her head lulled to the side in the damp grass.

Her eyes didn’t open again until she heard the sound of a roaming golf cart as it came to a stop beside her. The two security guards that monitored the northern side of the compound were already swearing and panting as they jogged toward her, calling for backup as Rabbit once again lost consciousness.

The End.
